About Dominica
Dominica (pronounced Dom-in-EE-ka) is known as the Nature Island of the Caribbean.
Dominica is NOT the Dominican Republic – We are situated at the northern end of the windward chain of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. She is the largest of this island group, lying between the two French Islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. Dominica is approximately 29 miles long and 16 miles at its widest point, with an area of 289.5 sq. miles. With a dense cluster of nine (9) volcanoes and even more volcanic domes, she is the most mountainous landscape in the region. Almost all the island’s lofty interior is covered in rainforest that conceals over 350 rivers and waterfalls – and much of it is unexplored.
Think Jurassic Park (without the dinosaurs – or any other life-threatening creatures) and you’ll get the picture. Whether you arrive at Dominica by air or sea, the island’s steep forest-covered mountain peaks, rising like green giants from the ocean, are such a jaw-dropping sight that it will take your breath away. Dominica makes you feel alive. Visiting is a reminder that to live life to your full potential, you must burst the bubble of the everyday and push your personal boundaries a little. A full day trekking through the Morne Trois Pitons National Park to the remarkable Boiling Lake; swimming through TiTou Gorge to a hidden waterfall; scuba diving abyssal reefs; rappelling down waterfalls on a thrilling canyoning trip – all of these are adventures that will stay with you, giving you a fresh perspective of what life is really about.
The island offers the most diverse range of flora and fauna in the whole of the Caribbean. More than 160 bird species have been sighted on Dominica. We also have a large population of frogs, small tree lizards, bats, butterflies, and two endemic parrot species. In addition, 22 species of whale and dolphin have been sighted all year round at different locations, and spotting excursions have an above 90% success rate. Divers from across the globe visit Dominica each year for its fantastic diving, with dive spots that descend to depths of 1,000 feet. Dining on Dominica is a culinary delight, including fresh fruit, exotic fresh fruit juices, vegetables, and a whole variety of spices.
